Past, Present & Future:

Past
What began Colorado’s rise to fame and power was the discovery of gold in the 'Richest Square Mile on Earth' now known as Central City. Annual production of precious metals in 1870 was an estimated one million dollars and rose to more than four million in the early 1900s. Central City was the crown jewel of the Rockies with princes, kings and presidents visiting the town. Within three years after the first discovery of gold in Gilpin County more than 100,000 people made the 600-mile journey to find their fortunes. Of course, many were not as prosperous but loved the town and soon called it home. Central City missed being the capital of Colorado by only vote.

Present
Much of the gold still remains but is financially inaccessible even with today’s modern technology and mining techniques. Today, Gilpin County riches are found in both Black Hawk and Central City. There are currently more than 25 casinos, a shuttle service connecting the cities and a joint visitor’s bureau. Black Hawk is home to the larger casinos while Central City tries to maintain the historic integrity of the original structures. Many are surprised to find that neither City delivers mail. Mail is distributed and picked up at each city’s local post office.

County history and life are still richly experienced with yearly summer festivals, walking tours, rodeos, and the historic Central City Opera, which runs from June-August each year.

Future
Gilpin County is recognized as being on the verge of a great growth wave due to its central location between downtown Denver and major ski resorts. The addition of the Central City Parkway has provided residents and visitors a direct and scenic access to these smaller mountain communities.

Gaming has also provided significant funds to the cities to stabilize and secure historic structures, vital to Colorado’s history. More so, gaming secures property values within the mountain towns, which are some of the top tourist destinations in Colorado. We are anxiously anticipating an increase in gaming limits. This should create a huge, positive impact on property values and the area is sure to see significant growth. The Prospectors Run community is beating the curve, giving buyers the opportunity to secure a mountain home while still offering affordable prices.

We invite you to discover the rich history from the Past, participate in exciting activities in the Present and secure your land for the Future.
