Fun History: In 1876, Colorado became a state and Central City missed being the capital by one vote. Central City became the first town in the nation to have all electric outside street lights in 1889 as well as one of the first towns to have telegraph and telephone service. The Weekly-Register Call newspaper is the oldest continuously published paper in Colorado. Halfway between Black Hawk and Central City a monument was erected to honor John Gregory. On May 6, 1859 he discovered one of the first gold mines in Colorado. His first pan contained 1/4 of an ounce of gold, the lode produced nearly one million ounces in future years.
